During the early days of the Space Age, extraterrestrial intelligence became a scientifically legitimate subject. Radio astronomy stood at the center of a cluster of disciplines that allowed humans to investigate the question of the existence of other civilizations in the universe. As such, the idea of communication through radio waves across the interstellar space took over the imagination of scientists. Based on archival work and oral history methods, I will show how scientists in the Soviet Union pioneered this domain in the 1960s.
