The case of kinematics, the genesis of a discipline

The word 'kinematics' was coined by Ampère at the end of the 1820s to denote a sub-discipline of mechanics that deals with all properties of motion that are independent of forces and masses. In the talk I will give a survey of the roots of kinematics from Antiquity until the first half of the 19th century. I will end with a brief discussion of the developments after Ampère.
