Call for Einstein Center Chronoi Fellowship Applications 2024 (1-12 months)

10/19/2022

Einstein Center Chronoi (EC-C) is now accepting applications for fellowships for the calendar year 2024. We welcome project proposals that fit the annual theme “Dynamics of time”.

Einstein Center Chronoi has been founded to enable researchers from Berlin along with guests from all over the world to address issues on the topic “Time and Awareness of Time in Antiquity” in an interdisciplinary research environment. The EC-C yearly appoints fellows who represent a broad spectrum of academic backgrounds and qualifications. EC-C fellows, who ideally work in collaboration with a tandem partner in Berlin, are invited to work at the EC-C in Berlin to conduct innovative and interdisciplinary research on the topic of "time" and exchange ideas with other researchers at the EC-C to contribute to its research agenda.

The EC-C’s annual theme for the year 2024 will be “Dynamics of Time”.

Time itself is not universal, static, homogenous, or linear but heterogeneous, dynamic, and multidirectional. How it is perceived and experienced varies over time as well as across different societies, within societies and over the life cycle. Particularly during periods of crisis, time often appears condensed, to move faster or to slow down. Historians correlate certain periods with processes of acceleration or deceleration, and terms such as “regression” and “recurrence” suggest a “reversibility” of the historical course. Similarly, concepts like the “simultaneity of the non-simultaneous” assume the availability of different temporal states at any given moment.

Applicants are encouraged to contact a Berlin-based tandem partner from one of the partner institutions of the EC-C: Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK), Berlin-Brandenburgische Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW), and Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG). This tandem partner will serve as a collaboration partner within the framework of the applicant’s proposed research at the EC-C. Fellowship applicants should further demonstrate that their projects are laid out for the time of the fellowship and that they will be able to show some (preliminary) results from their research done during their time at the EC-C. Fellowship applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree and actively contribute to the structure and development of the EC-C. Moreover, fellows will be invited to contribute to the Chronoi Bookseries Chronoi: Time, Time Awareness, Time Management published by De Gruyter.

Please note the following:
