Spectacular Astronomy and the Planetarium

Since the nineteenth century, astronomical spectacle has been one of the major loci where spatial and visual cultures of modernity have been elaborated and experienced at the intersection of science, technology and spectacle. I will present PARS, a collective undertaking combining academic research with artistic and professional mediation that looks into the performance, the material and technological characteristics of astronomical shows, their social and cultural contexts but also their perception and experience by different audiences. Taking the example of the planetarium, I will show how we explore the shared experience of astronomical spectacles and the ways in which it contributed and might continue to foster new senses of the collective and of the modern world.

Dr. Charlotte Bigg promovierte an der Universität Cambridge nach dem Studium der Wissenschaftstheorie und der Geschichte an den Universitäten von Victoria (Kanada) und Oxford. Anschließend arbeitete sie am Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte in Berlin und als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der ETH Zürich. Seit 2009 forscht sie am Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Centre Alexandre Koyré und unterrichtet an der École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris. Sie arbeitet derzeit über verschiedenen Formen der öffentlichen Darstellung der Wissenschaften (von Ausstellungen und Vorstellungen bis hin zu Architektur) sowie über die visuellen Kulturen der physikalischen Wissenschaften.
