In many countries researchers are under pressure. When research generates uncomfortable insights it is often denied and countered with "alternative facts". The research community is denigrated as being part of the establishment, which argues only in its own interest. Experts are scolded, their budgets cut. Not only in the US, where Donald Trump denies the human causes of global warming. "The post-factual national populism that is currently haunting the world could become a threat to our civilization," warns the German climatologist Hans Joachim Schellnhuber. What has brought about this crisis of trust? How does the public perceive of science? And what conclusion do scientists have to draw?
